Some folks have said to us that “South Bend has lost too much population to support a ‘Modern Streetcar’ system. We just aren’t densely populated enough.”

Well… consider this:

The population of South Bend in 2019: 102,026 (and growing, by the way)

The population of South Bend in the heyday of the streetcar, 1930: 104,193

… and the same look at Mishawaka:

The population of Mishawaka in 2019: 50,363

The population of Mishawaka in the heyday of the streetcar, 1930: 28,630

…. And this does not include the student population of Notre Dame (12,680) and Saint Mary’s (1,400) Please note also that if there is a stop close to Notre Dame, these students will be likely regular users of the Modern Streetcar.
